Evenflo Incorporated issued a recall on its baby cribs. The kids' product was found to contain a construction defect that could seriously injure children.

On June 24, 2010, Evenflo Incorporated recalled one of its product. Reports were confirmed that the cribs’ sides could fall accidentally or become detached from the frame. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a massive recall to warn consumers of the safety risks associated with the general design of the drop-side cribs.

Baby Cribs Recalled by Evenflo

The kids’ product listed under the recall was the Jenny Lind Cribs. The infant cribs were sold at many children’s stores across the United States. The baby beds were produced from January 2000 to November 2007. The cribs typically sold for about $200.

The cribs for babies were sold in various colors. The Jenny Lind cribs ranged in color from natural wood to white or maple. The cribs were produced in three general styles. Evenflo sold drop-side cribs, convertible cribs, and hidden hardware cribs. All three styles were part of the Jenny Lind line. The three styles were also available in the different colors.

In total, Evenflo is recalling sixteen different styles of cribs in the latest recall. The company estimates that approximately 750,000 units are involved. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission provided a complete list of all of the model numbers listed under the infant crib recall.

Defects in the Jenny Lind Cribs

Evenflo released the information that thirty-one individual reports were received. Of the reported incidents, one boy became trapped in a crib with the drop-side malfunctioned. Nine children were injured when they fell from a defective crib. In the nine cases, the side either slightly separated from the frame, creating a gap for the children to fall through or the side completely detached from the frame.

Fourteen cased involved a defect crib side but no children were injured. There were also two confirmed reports of children becoming trapped when the mattress detached from the support system. The children were forced down the uneven surface to an area between the mattress and the bottom of the frame.

Actions to Take Following Recall of Infant Beds

The Evenflo recall is part of a large, national recall of all drop-side cribs. The infant beds are unsafe and use should be discontinued immediately. Individuals should not attempt to fix defective cribs. The Consumer Product Safety Commission suggested that alternative sleeping arrangements should be used until a repair kit from Evenflo is received.

Two repair kits are available to consumers. One repair kit corrects a defect with the drop-sides of the cribs. The kits’ accessories should help to immobilize the sides and reduce the chance that a child will fall from the crib. The second kit repairs the mattress support system.

Consumers may contact Evenflo at (800) 356-2229 between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday to gain refund and repair kit information. Individuals may also visit the Evenflo website for more information about the recall or to browse more items from the company.
