Schurman Fine Papers issued a recall of the jewelry packaged with the Papyrus Brand Greeting Cards after it was discovered the bracelets contained high lead levels.

Issued on February 2, 2010, the Schurman Fine Papers Company issued a recall of its children’s greeting cards with jewelry. Testing has shown that the levels of lead present in the bracelets exceeded the federal standards. Working with Schurman Fine Papers, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also issued a recall to warn consumers of the risks.

Jewelry With Kids’ Cards Recalled

The jewelry involved in the recall is the Papyrus Brand Children’s Greeting Cardwith bracelets. The front of the cards read “Happy Birthday To You”. On the back of the card was printed BD 63401 along with Jean Card & Gift Company. The UPC number of 734524634013 was also printed on the back of the card.

The bracelets were packaged with the colorful cards. There was a butterfly charm on the jewelry. Two brightly colored flowers were also part of the jewelry. All of the charms and beads on the bracelets were made of painted wood.

The jewelry was available for purchase from card and retail stores across the United States and Canada. The bracelets were produced from February 2004 to September 2009. It is estimated that about 175,000 units were sold at a price of about $7 each.

Defects of Jewelry Packaged With Kids’ Cards

There are no confirmed reports of injury or death related to the use of the jewelry. Lead poisoning is a health risk but symptoms may not be identified until years later. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Schurman Fine Papers issued the recall to warn as many consumers as possible.

The paint used to decorate the jewelry contains lead levels that exceeded the federal standard for safety. This is dangerous to humans through two sources of entry. The first would be by inhalation. Children can inhale lead through the air by being in close contact with the jewelry. Wearing the bracelet would be enough for lead poisoning to occur.

The second means of intake would be orally. Unsupervised children who place the jewelry in their mouths can ingest lead directly. Either means of intake can have lifelong consequences for the child.

Prolonged exposure to lead can develop into brain damage and kidney failure. Changes in behavior and mood and decreases in I.Q. are also noted to occur from lead poisoning.

Actions to Take Following a Recall of Bracelet Packaged With Kids’ Cards

In order to remove the risk of lead poisoning the jewelry should be removed from children as soon as possible. Those who have purchased them may discard the bracelets if desired but a refund would not be possible with this action. Consumers may contact the producers of the bracelet for recall information.

Interested individuals may call the company at (888) 990-9095 between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. This is the only way to gain additional refund information from the company because a website was not presented by Schurman Fine Papers.

Additional recall information can be gained from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website. This site contains updated recall information from across the United States.
