On March 3, 2010 Chandigarh Fashion, based in Flushing, New York, issued a recall on its children’s bracelets. The company discovered that the jewelry for kids contained lead levels that exceeded the federal standards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a jewelry recall in cooperation with Chandigarh Fashion to warn consumers of the safety risk.
Jewelry Recall Issued by Chandigarh Fashion
The children’s bangle bracelets from Chandigarh Fashion are the focus of the jewelry recall. The kids’ jewelry was available in New York and Chicago from May 2007 to August 2008. Chandigarh Fashion and Sonia Selections stores carried the bracelets which typically sold for about $2.
Consumers could purchase the jewelry in packages of 24 bracelets. All of the bracelets had a gold base color. For variety, the jewelry also had a secondary color of orange, green, red, black, or maroon.
Defects Found in Children’s Bracelets
Chandigarh Fashion Inc. had not received reports of injury or death from the use of the bracelets. Lead poisoning develops long-term symptoms so the health risks are not seen initially. The jewelry recall was issued to warn consumers of the safety risk and retrieve as many bracelets as possible to reduce future health concerns.
The paint covering the accessories contained lead levels that exceeded the federal standards for safety. Children can be exposed to lead via two different processes while using the jewelry. While wearing the jewelry, kids may inhale lead from the air. Children may also ingest lead directly if the accessories are placed in the mouth.
Small amounts of lead can build in the body through daily exposure. As lead levels increase there is greater risk of damage to internal organs like the brain and kidneys. High lead levels are also linked to decreases in I.Q. and increased moodiness in children.
Actions to Take Following the Kids’ Accessory Recall
Consumers need to remove the bracelets from children as soon as possible. Individuals may discard the bracelets but a refund would not be possible without the product. If seeking a refund, it is necessary to return the accessories to the store where the items were purchased.
There is no phone number or website listed for Chandigarh Fashion Incorporated based on the information from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Consumers may need to go directly to the place of purchase to obtain the refund.
