Based on information released by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Battat Inc. issued a children’s product recall on August 2, 2011. Several reports were received that a design defect could pose a safety risk to young children. To support Battat and to warn as many consumers as possible the CPSC also issued a product warning.
Toy Keys with Remotes Recalled by Battat
The kids’ product listed under the recall included two different key sets from Battat Incorporated. The B. FunKeys and the Parents Magazine Electronic Keys are being recalled because of a defect. Both sets were sold at kids’ stores across the nations as well as online. The B. FunKeys were available from April 2010 to May 2011. The Parents Magazine Electronic Keys were sold from January 2006 to December of 2009. The children’s products typically sold for about $9.
B. FunKeys were available in two colors. The remote was available in either a green or red color. The silver keys were made with multi-colored key identifiers placed on the tops. The keys were attached to the remote by a small plastic ring. The factory code of H58000-01 or H26300-01 could be located on the back of the remote.
Parents Magazine Electronic Keys had remotes created in a variety of colors. The keys on this set were all a solid color with no key identifier present. The keys were also attached to the remote by a small plastic ring. The codes of H26300-01 could be found on the back of the remote.
Defects Found in Children’s Toy Key Sets from New York Based Company
Battat Incorporated released the information that 31 reports were received. Of the reports, 17 were associated with the keys breaking during normal play. The remaining 14 reports are of the small rings, which would hold the set together, breaking during typical play activities. No reports of injury were received.
Because the keys and key ring could break during normal play it is important that children do not continue using the toy. Unsupervised children are at great risk of choking. From information gained from the incident reports, the small pieces that would break while a child was unsupervised increased the choking risks linked with the key sets.

The children’s keys are unsafe and should be removed from kids as soon as possible. The toys can be retained until the consumer receives additional instructions about the recall. The company can be contacted to gain information on how to obtain the replacement key sets.
