Mini Stars Building Sets are recalled by Edushape Limited. The kids' product could pose a choke hazard.

According to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Edushape Ltd issued a children’s product recall on July 7, 2011. Reports were received that a design defect could pose a safety risk to small children. In support of Edushape, the U.S. CPSC also issued a safety warning on the kids’ toy.

Mini Stars Building Sets Recalled by Edushape Ltd

The kids’ product listed under the recall was the Mini Stars Building Set. The children’s toys were sold in most stores that carried kids’ toys across the United States. The sets were also available on a variety of online sites including Toys R Us and Walmart. The toys were available for purchase from January 2007 to December of 2009. The children’s product could range in price from $10 to $50.

The children’s item is a mini version of the Edushape’s toy that was recalled in September 2010. The toys were small, open rings with six arms extending from the base. Each arm ended in a circular bulb. From the end of one bulb to the end of opposite bulb was about three inches long.

Edushape created the stars in green, yellow, blue, and red. The individual stars were one solid color. Each available set contained all four colors of stars. The price differences in the sets were based on the number of packaged pieces. The smallest set was 12 pieces with the largest group having 72 pieces. Edushape also made a 24, 36, and 48 piece set.

Defects in Children’s Plastic Stars from New York Based Company

From information released by Edushape, two incident reports were received. These noted a product defect found during normal use of the children’s toy. No injuries were reported at the time of this article. Edushape issued the recall to help reduce possible injuries in the future.

The arms located around the toy’s plastic ring could detach during normal play. These small bulbs pose a serious choking risk. It would be easy for the item to become lodged in a child’s throat if played with inappropriately. The safety risk increases if the young child was left alone with the toy.

Actions to Take Following Recall of Kid’s Star Set

The kids’ sets are unsafe and should be removed from children as soon as possible. This includes the larger version of the stars produced by Edushape. The company can be contacted to discuss possible solutions to the product defect.

Consumers that are interested in obtaining a replacement set may contact Edushape at (800) 404-4744 between the hours for 9am and 4pm, Monday through Friday. The company can also be contacted to gain information about receiving company credit in place of a replacement set. Additionally, individuals can visit the Edushape website to gain more recall information on the toy or to browse other available items from the company.
