Based on information released by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Rugby Laboratories Incorporated issued a children’s product recall on June 23, 2011. Additional testing discovered that a safety feature used on many medication bottles could be avoided with the use of a secondary top. The CPSC issued a product warning in addition to Rugby Laboratories to warn as many consumers as possible about the safety risk.
Children’s Pain and Fever Medication Recalled by Rugby Labs
The kids’ product listed under the recall was the Children’s Pain & Fever Concentrated Drops. The children’s medication was sold at drug stores and most retailers that carried children’s medication across the United States. The pain and fever med was available to consumers from January 2009 to June of 2011. The bottle typically sold for about $4.
The box that held the children’s medication bottle was primarily pink in color. The name of the company was printed on the front of the box in black letters. The purpose of the medication was printed with large yellow letters also on the front of the box. Consumers could clearly see on the front of the package that the medication was cherry flavored.
The actual bottle was labeled similarly to the box. The bottle contained the same company logo and medication information in the same colors as the packaging. The bottle was packaged with a child-proof safety top. An additional dropper was also packaged with the bottle.
Defects in Children’s Medication from Altaire Pharmaceuticals
Based on information released by Rugby Laboratories, no reports of incident or injury were received from the use of this product. There was great concern that and oversight in the safety features associated with the added dropper could be a safety risk for small children.
The original medication top had a safety feature that made removing the top difficult for children. The dropper packaged with the bottle could also serve as a top for the medication. The dropper did not contain a safety feature and could easily be removed by children.
If left unattended, a child could access the medication without fully understanding the safety risk associated with improper dosages. With all medication it is important that the bottle is stored safely out of the reach of children.
Actions to Take Following Recall of Kids’ Medication for Pain and Fever
The children’s medication is unsafe when sealed improperly and very dangerous if stored where kids could gain access. If sealed with the original top the product can be stored safely.
