The CPSC and Variety Wholesalers Incorporated have recalled the latter's toy trucks because the levels of lead found in the paint exceeded the federal standard allowed.

Variety Wholesalers Inc. of Henderson, North Carolina, has recalled one item previously carried in its toy department. The original recall was issued on December 10, 2009. Variety Wholesalers Inc. issued the recall in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after tests confirmed that the toy’s paint contained high levels of lead.

Toy Truck Recalled

Variety Wholesalers Inc. is composed of three separate divisions that share the characteristics of selling retail merchandise at locally competitive prices. Super Dollaris an example of a store in the smallest division whileRoseswould be in the largest division of the organization. The merchandise can range from toys and furniture to clothes and jewelry.

The item being recalled is the Super Rigs Play Set. The set consists of a truck and flatbed that carry a helicopter and tank. Two male figures are also part of the play set. The vehicles and people are painted in a yellow and green camouflage pattern.

The packaging has a clear side to view the entire set. Super Rigs Play Set is written in orange, yellow, and white letters in the center of the package. The item number located on the bottom of the box is 67007. The bar code for the play set is 6-98567-67007-3. The truck also has 45TNGO9 written on the bottom section of the flatbed.

Variety Wholesalers Inc. estimated that 700 units were sold between September 2009 and November of the same year. Several discount stores throughout the Southeast United States carried the play set. The average price to purchase the set was $20.

Problems With Recalled Toy Truck

No confirmed reports of injury or death associated with the play set were received by either Variety Wholesalers Inc. or the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission at the time of this article. The potential damage caused by lead poisoning can have long-term and life-long effects. Because of the risk, Variety Wholesalers Inc. is working diligently to notify all consumers.

The lead levels found in the paint violates the federal standard and is the reason for the recall. Lead found in the paint could be inhaled in the air by a child during normal play. Behavior problems and damage to the brain, bone marrow, and kidney can directly be traced to exposure to high levels of lead.

Actions to Take Following Recall of Toy Truck

Because of the safety risk associated with lead poisoning, it is important to remove the toy from children immediately. The toy should be stored safely if those who have purchased them are interested in a refund or discarded.

Variety Wholesalers has asked consumers to return the entire play set to the store where the toys were purchased for either a refund or a replacement toy. Consumers may contact Variety Wholesalers directly at (800) 678-7776 during normal business hours for more information on the recall.
